Title: The Three Brothers
Yosemite National Park. El Capitan on the left and Three Brothers on the right. The story of the Three Brothers peaks in Yosemite is tied to the indigenous Ahwahneechee people and the Mariposa Battalion expedition of 1851. The Three Brothers are three granite peaks named Eagle Peak (the highest), Middle Brother, and Lower Brother. According to legend, they were named after the three sons of Chief Tenaya, leader of the Ahwahneechee tribe. These sons were Indian scouts captured by the Mariposa Battalion during their incursion into Yosemite Valley to relocate Native Americans. One of the captured sons was killed. The rock formation was renamed “Three Brothers” in honor of these sons.
